Cal 2-34 Repower with Beta?

Thanks I'm curious how you worked the exhaust. Given the "backwards" orientation of the engine, where does the exhaust come out of the manifold (bow or stern) and how did you route it to the transom. Did you need to remodel the companionway stairs cabinetry to make room for any of this? Thanks!

I've been following this thread.. been thinking about all possibilities since I'm having such difficulty with the Paragon trasmission in my 34-III. I also have the Westerbeke 30 which runs great when it has a working transmission attached. I'm seeing prices like $20k installed for a new Beta and similar for a new Yanmar.

Having owned an Ericson 35 Mk2 with an Atomic 4, I'd also vote against it. I tried liking that engine and replaced/repaired many things on it. I believe it could be a good engine if cared for meticulously since day one, but once they are neglected even a little (as mine was when I bought it), it is very difficult to bring them back to a reliable state. It left me stranded with Boat US on speed dial too many times. That being said, Ken at Moyer Marine is a gem. He spent many hours talking with me and helping me get that engine going. I also liked the absence of diesel smell. I always took safety precautions because of the gasoline.

Here's the pictures I have. She's at Spaulding in Sausalito right now for a rig and refit and the whole crew at Spaulding just came down with COVID, so I'm staying away. What you also need, but I don't have right now, is a shot of the companionway from the front of the cabin showing the heat exchanger, manifold and exhaust hose but you can see a lot of whats going on from these shots. I always have incredible difficulty visualizing whats going on when folks post photos so I marked the obvious. What I don't have and don't know is what the original engine cover and companionway stairs looked like from factory. I've searched and it's not clear to me. Here's a rough description of what I have:
1. Marked #1 in the pictures and looking into the boat through the companionway and furthest forward is the lowest, bottom step or stair of the companionway stairs. This is a box with four sides: top, forard side, left and right sides that fits against the next stair with two latches. This comes off first.
2. Marked #2 in the pictures is the top stair that is a much bigger and heavier "box"with three sides: top, left and right. When this comes off, you have access to virtually all of the forward side of the engine, transmission, gearbox, heat exchanger, exhaust system
3. Finally marked #3 but you cant see it is a third wooden piece that removes and reveals all the bits and pieces around the engine forward section: siphon, filters, and so on. This piece looks like a wooden fireplace and surrounds boxes #1 and #2.

I found some discard photos that are blurred but do show the "front" of my M-40B engine.

1. As labelled in my previous post #3 is the "fireplace" that surrounds "box #1" and "box #2" that form the companionway stairs. You can see the latches that hold the #3 "fireplace" to the #2 "box" for example.
2. Here you can also see in both photos the heat exchanger horizontally and the hose from the manifold to the gray plastic muffler and then to the exhaust hose that leads past the engine up and out the transom. That length of exhaust hose isn't cheap.

I'd be very interested to hear what others have in the way of the engine cover and companionway stairs. My pieces (#1, #2, and #3) are very well lined and insulated but I wonder if I could do even better. I think most of the remaining noise is from the air intake. I was also planning on adding a fire port in one of these "boxes" (most likely #3, the "fireplace") and am wondering if that will make noise levels worse (it cant make them better!).

Here are some better pictures showing what I think you need. Here I remove the "boxes" one by one or at least two of them, leaving the final piece, the "fireplace" in position. I do not know how much of this engine furniture is original.

You can see the M-40B manifold on the left, the hose to the gray muffler, then the start of the long exhaust that runs back, up and out the transom. I have no idea where the original engine sat, but have pictures of mount placement on the stringers and how far the transmission pokes over the bilge covers etc.
