There's an old saying that you're supposed to smile as you row away from your boat. Last night, after a lively sail on the Cal 20, I was grinning. The light was just right, showing off the really pretty lines that Bill Lapworth drew for this little boat. She's got a nice spring to the sheer fore and aft and really stands out in the mooring field. One of her mooring neighbors is a plain-jane boat of some unknown origin with a flat sheer and an odd box of a cabin trunk sitting on top. I've never seen that boat under sail. Perhaps she performs well, but in terms of looks, she's an example of how not to do it.
My sail started off with the genoa and about 5 minutes in the wind shifted to the SE (we never have SE winds here unless a storm is coming) and she was on her ear. OK, change the jib. Much better. The wind was up and down--just before I was going to hank the genoa back on, it went up again--for a very good evening's sail.
