Hey all! I was given this 2-30 in January of 2024 by a friend who knew I would finish a refit and sail her! I feathered out and glassed all the holes in the deck (just under 650 in all) and started over. Sanded off all the non-skid and painted the deck with awlgrip. Everything leads back to the cockpit now. Single line reefing with 2 reefs. Built a dodger, did a valve job on the A4, built a new muffler, installed a heater, a ladder, AIS, a new radio, and an outboard bracket. Built a false floor between the head and the sink with storage underneath, makes the head a lot more comfortable and adds a little storage. Built a propane locker in the port lazarette, installed a propane range. New window for the port aft deadlight. Anchor roller. PTZ camera near the top of the mast, Furuno RADAR, new table-top for the galley, complete electrical replacement and lots of red and white LED lights. All new stanchions from a different boat, dyneema lifelines, water filtration system, a couple of 135Ah LiFEPO4 batteries and charging system, new DST810. Also installed a Pelagic tiller pilot which is wonderful. Replaced the head as well.
I made it out over 100 times last year. longest trip was 2 weeks from Marquette, MI to the North Channel and back. This year looks like it'll have a little less sailing time.
This winter I recut all the sheaves in the mast to accept 3/8 line rather than the cables that were in it. All new halyards and wind instruments are in the mail right now. My lovely wife bought me Starlink for Christmas. I got a trashed 7 foot fiberglass dinghy and rebuilt that over the winter. Rebuilt the cap on the rudderstock and built a new aluminum tiller.
I'm looking for a nice little diesel if anyone has any comments on that I'd be very interested.
Thinking about replacing the forestay and backstay, not sure. Also considering a tri-color light.
Also looking for a working jib in decent shape and a trysail.
I did all the work myself. If you have any questions, I really enjoy meeting new people and solving problems!

That would be five years of work for us. Beautiful boat! Are those the northern lights?

Wow, what a project! And now you've got a boat that meets your needs and will last a long time. The yard that hauls & stores my Cal 20 just cut up a bunch of nice old abandoned boats last fall. It is sad to see vessels scrapped that, with some work, could be opportunities for people.
Old boats are part of my life. My newer one is the '67 Cal. My older one is a 1961 Seafarer Polaris that I have sailed and maintained since 1968.
I'll be replying to the PM.

As to the replacement diesel, considering where you sail, it might be a better move to install an electric motor. More torque through rough water, no oil changes, valve adjustments, filters, etc., and the batteries can be strategically located in the center of effort of the boat for maximum stability. I know of other Cal owners who have been very happy with the conversion!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your posts, I started working again... things got busier.
Yes, the Northern Lights were beautiful that night!
She's a great boat for me, I wouldn't mind electric, but I'm concerned about overall range, which for the moment is a shortcoming of electric. Batteries are getting better by the hour... so we'll see.
I just got an old sail I'm going to convert into a storm trysail, that'll be nice to have on voyages.
I think I'm going to rebuild my dodger, maybe even put together a hard dodger, a friend wants to build one for his Falmouth Cutter, we might do that together.
I'm currently waiting on a new strong track from tides marine. Need to sew the new slides onto my main once they get here.
Work is fun, but it's competition for my time. Afraid I'm not going to get out as much as I would like to this summer, but at least I should be able to get her ready for lots of sailing time in 2026.
